Stress Free Travel Days at Sonesta Los Angeles Airport LAX

Travel days can sometimes feel like a whirlwind, but we found the perfect way to slow things down with a stay the day before our flight at the beautifully renovated Sonesta Los Angeles Airport LAX, located right near the Los Angeles Airport.

I didn’t realize how much of a difference it would make. I thought it would be convenient, sure. I expected it to save us some time. What I didn’t expect was how much it would change the whole mood of our travel day.

We ate well, slept well, watched airplanes by the pool, and let the hotel handle the hardest parts of being near the airport.

Staying near the Los Angeles Airport took away the hard part

Flight days, especially ones that starts early or involve a lot of logistics, are the perfect time to treat yourself with a stay near the airport.

There’s something so nice about waking up already close. You don’t have to calculate Los Angeles traffic, which is something even locals can't do. You don’t have to leave absurdly early “just in case” and then sit at the gate half-asleep with bad coffee.

For us, the best part was the free shuttle to LAX. It runs every 15 mins, 24 hours a day. That alone made the stay feel easy.

A shuttle sounds like a small thing until you’re actually using it. No figuring out rideshare pickup zones. We just got ourselves and our bags ready, headed down, and waited for the next shuttle.

The hotel felt surprisingly quiet

I’ll be honest, I assumed staying by the airport would mean noise. The property was quiet in a way that actually surprised me.

The renovation really adds to that feeling. Everything felt fresh, bright, and very Los Angeles. We especially loved that the rooms had no carpet.

Our room became a reset button.

We weren’t trying to squeeze in one more errand or track down dinner in a new neighborhood. We could just arrive, settle in, and let the rest of the day be easy.

Century Taproom made dinner easy and actually good

Airport-adjacent meals can be hit or miss.

Sometimes you’re tired and hungry, and the easiest option is just whatever is closest. Century Taproom made staying put feel like the better choice.

We didn’t have to get back in the car. We didn’t have to search for reservations. We just went downstairs and had a good meal.

Century Taproom had the kind of relaxed atmosphere that works perfectly before a flight. Casual enough that you don’t have to dress up after spending the day in travel mode, but still nice enough that it feels like dinner.

For couples, I think this is one of those underrated hotel details. A good on-site restaurant can change the whole rhythm of a stay. It lets the evening feel like part of the getaway instead of a logistical pause between home and the airport.

The menu at Century Taproom draws inspiration from California and offers a variety of excellent choices. We began with the poke nachos, which featured a generous portion of melt-in-your-mouth poke and avocado. Our main courses were both outstanding. The Lobster Noodles included large pieces of lobster and plenty of shrimp, with thick and creamy noodles. The Ribeye steak was perfectly cooked and very tender. We ended our meal by sharing the house made crème brûlée, which was the perfect finale.

We had a wonderful time, discussing our upcoming plans, savoring delicious food, and slowing down the day with a well-crafted cocktail. We weren't rushed at all. We finished with a game of shuffleboard before heading back to our rooms.

The pool gave us a real pause before the trip

I don’t always think of airport hotels as places where you hang out. Usually they feel practical. You land, sleep, leave. Or you check in late, set three alarms, and hope for the best.

But here, the pool made the stay feel like a mini getaway. My husband and I got to recharge and relax by the water and watch airplanes.

Watching planes take off and land from the pool area was such a fun little moment. It reminded me why I love travel in the first place. Planes can feel stressful when you’re racing to catch one, but from a lounge chair, they feel exciting again.

When you travel as much as we do, sometimes you don't know if you are coming or going. We got to sit there together, rest, and take in that feeling of being between places. Not quite at home, not quite at our next destination, just paused for a second. That in-between space can be stressful, but this time it felt calm.

Why this worked so well for a couple’s travel day

Some hotel stays are about the destination. This one was about making the transition easier. Honestly that’s something couple travelers don’t talk about enough. A trip doesn’t only start when you arrive somewhere dreamy. The travel day counts too.

A few things made the biggest difference for us:

We stayed close to the airport without feeling like we were sleeping inside it.

That balance is everything. Convenience matters, but so does rest.

We kept meals simple.

Dinner at Century Taproom and breakfast the next morning meant fewer decisions and a much calmer schedule.

We built in time to relax.

The pool wasn’t just a nice extra. It turned the night before flying into part of the experience.

We let the shuttle do the work.

Sometimes the most romantic thing on a travel day is removing one more source of stress.
